You knew it was coming. The standard “round up of the year” post, I’m a living-breathing cliché, I know.
There is no question 2017 has been the most incredible and unexpected year. Unexpected in the fact that if you had told me this time last year that I would spend third of it out of the country I’d have looked at you flabbergasted, and now I would ask why I didn’t spend longer?!
“So Izzy, what are the highlights of your year?” Well, funny you should ask, there are too many to tell in one post, but here’s a couple:
- My feet gripping the toe shredding rock. Deep breathing drowning out the shouts coming from the boat below. Then I hear, “She’s not going to do it.” And in that moment, I’ve never been so certain; I was going to throw myself off this cliff. 3, 2, 1, SQUEALANDSOMEOTHERPROFANITIES! I found myself plunging into the surprisingly warm depths of Halong Bay. (Sorry Mum)
- The Railway Bridge. No specific time. Hopping over the wall or sliding under the fence. Whether it be on the first evening off exploring Capitola with brand new friends, or the final night scoffing food with only 10 minutes left to spend with my new family. I can honestly say it is one my favourite places in the world. Not because of the rustic aesthetic which makes it brilliant for Instagram pictures, but because I can imagine my beautiful American family bullying each other in the best way possible!
- University. Officially moving out and pretending to be an adult- well a different kind of adult! From September to now I have had a blast. I am loving the degree I’m doing (please quote me on that on third year). I’ve met and live with wonderful people who are intelligent as well as know how to have a good time, and I’m yet to burn anything in the kitchen!
I’m a very different Izzy to the one 365 days ago. A better person. I won’t lie to you and tell you that I “found myself” in my gap year, far from it. Lessons have been taught and will continue to be learnt. The biggest difference is that this Izzy no longer feels alone. I have a new global family that who make this huge world feel a little bit smaller. I have a new appreciation for my “blood family” who have done nothing but support me in everything I’ve done.
So, in this upcoming year, I can only hope that it is just as wonderful 2017 and I hope it is for you too. If you take anything from this post please let it be to surround yourself with people who make you the best and happiest you, because in the end, the memories you create are what matter.
Happy New Year lovelies xxx
